LET'S GET PULVERIZING!

♻️"Does our glass get recycled?"

Many people are shocked to discover there is no glass recycling in Spokane County. Some say: “We’re told to put it in our recycling bins, so it’s getting recycled, right?”

Unfortunately the answer is still no, it’s not being recycled. Glass can be a nuisance in the waste management world. It can wreak havoc on machines, ruin other valuable recyclables, and pose a hazard to workers.

🧐 "What should we do with our glass?"

Glass containers can be washed and reused at home for storage of food or non-food items, turned into drinking glasses or wind chimes, used as vases for fresh flowers or little pots for plants. That’s one of the reasons we’ve started by working with local artists to upcycle some of our glass and are doing a pilot study on bottle washing.

😩 "But there's still a lot of glass. What about the rest of the glass?"

Did you know that glass can be pulverized back into clean, safe, and non-sharp sand and gravel? We are raising money for a small bottle crusher that will turn our unwanted glass containers into materials we can safely use for landscaping, aquariums, sand boxes, concrete, and more!

Our fundraising target is $20,000.

This will get us a bottle crusher, personal protective equipment, the initial equipment we need to safely collect glass donations and store aggregate, and cover our insurance and permitting requirements. We know that one small bottle crusher isn’t going to manage all of our glass waste, but it’s just the beginning. With this small system in place, we’ll be able to convince our key local stakeholders that a larger system to process our glass (which is already planned out!) is not only possible, but will create more economic opportunities for our region while reducing our landfilling.
